Banking the Upstart Solar Industry: Featured in American Banker

Solar has made a lot of progress as a mainstream energy source. We're no longer discussing whether solar is a viable option, but rather what mechanisms we can put in place to make it accessible to more people. The key challenge now is that better and more sophisticated funding solutions are needed to help the solar industry reach its full potential.

This spring, we had the pleasure of sitting in on the Banking on Solar working group, which was organized by the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Representatives of the solar industry were joined by bankers, regulators and lawyers. The goal was to address the barriers that banks face when lending to businesses and homeowners for solar upgrades and equipment.

SolarCity Deal Lights Way for Solar Securitisation - Mercatus Featured

SolarCity may have created a securitization blueprint for the future last week with a new trade that sidesteps worries about repaying tax credits if the underlying collateral goes bust.

The company embedded a master lease provision in the trade to avoid triggering the repayment of those credits on any project in the deal that ends up in foreclosure.

Fears about such repayments have long stymied securitization in the solar sector, and indeed SolarCity is thus far the only entity that has sold a trade based on solar panel leases.

Mercatus Aims to Accelerate Solar Securitizations - Adopts SAPC Standards

Mercatus announces that it has formally adopted the SAPC Working Group standard contract documents for both residential and commercial solar. The move provides yet another vote of confidence in the SAPC standards, which have been widely supported by the solar industry. 

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sematech helped ignite the U.S. semiconductor market. Haresh Patel, CEO of Mercatus, Inc., believes that the Solar Access to Public Capital (SAPC) initiative will have a similar impact on the solar industry.

On April 10, Business Insider reported that solar energy had just reached a critical milestone in its ascent as a major worldwide energy source. In its article, “The Solar Industry Has Been Waiting 60 Years For This To Happen - And It Just Did,” BI cites an AllianceBernstein note that points out that, for the first time in its more than 60-year history, solar is now comparatively priced with traditional energy sources like crude oil, natural gas, and coal.
